Energy Company

customer project app (mobile)

Date

May - June 2025

Role

UX Design, UI Design, Design system

Energy Company is a solar energy provider helping customers make the switch to clean, renewable power. During my freelance engagement, I was tasked with designing a native mobile app to give customers real-time updates on their solar installation projects - filling a crucial gap in communication and transparency post-sale.

The problem

Customers had no way to check the status of their solar system installations after the sale was completed. This lack of visibility left users feeling confused, anxious, and out of the loop about their project’s progress.

The goal

To design a mobile app that enables customers to seamlessly track their solar installation - from sale to completion. The app needed to align with the company’s branding and design standards, while offering a smooth and intuitive user experience that supported backend integration for automated updates.

IDEATION

User flows

I began the design process by collaborating closely with the product manager, who provided a set of clearly defined deliverables and user stories based on the solar project lifecycle. These user stories outlined how customers interact with Energy Company from the moment they sign up for a solar project via the Customer Dashboard to when they begin using the mobile app to track their installation progress.

From these stories, I mapped out the end-to-end user experience across six primary flows:

  1. Login Flow — Accessing the app using credentials created during the purchase process on the Customer Dashboard.

  2. Home Screen Navigation — Viewing key updates, navigation widgets, and a notification panel immediately after login.

  3. Project Tracker — Tracking real-time progress across stages of solar installation.

  4. Live Chat Support — Engaging with a chatbot and operations team for support.

  5. Project Details — Viewing specifics of the purchased solar package, synced with Customer Dashboard data.

  6. Account Management — Updating user information stored with Energy Company.

By organizing the experience around these flows, I ensured the interface aligned with the operational processes and backend infrastructure already in place. Each flow was optimized to feel intuitive and responsive, minimizing confusion for new users and reducing support requests.

DESIGN

Low fidelity wireframes

Once the user flows were established, I created low-fidelity wireframes to visualize layout ideas and explore content hierarchy early in the process. These wireframes facilitated quick feedback cycles with the product manager, allowing us to identify gaps, clarify requirements, and iterate rapidly. This early validation helped ensure alignment before moving into high-fidelity designs.

High fidelity wireframes and prototype

As I moved into high-fidelity wireframes, I incorporated key branding elements - such as typefaces, iconography, color schemes, and layout grids - aligned with the Energy Company’s existing website and Customer Dashboard. This ensured a cohesive visual experience across all customer touchpoints.

The high-fidelity mockups were iterated based on regular feedback from stakeholders, refining details around layout, copy, and user interactions until the final design was approved. Once finalized, the designs were handed off to developers with accompanying specifications and components. The app is currently in development.

Style Guide

I developed a comprehensive style guide and component library with the company’s design language in mind. This included reusable buttons, icons, cards, color tokens, and typography guidelines—all tailored to reflect Energy Company’s brand identity and ensure consistency across the mobile app.

Reflection

Designing the Energy Company mobile app was a rewarding experience that strengthened my ability to translate real user needs into practical, scalable design solutions. Working with clear user stories and tight timelines taught me how to prioritize features and iterate efficiently through feedback loops. Building the style guide from the ground up - while maintaining brand alignment with existing platforms - sharpened my skills in design systems and cross-platform consistency. This project also deepened my collaboration with developers and stakeholders, reinforcing the value of clear communication and shared understanding in bringing a product to life. Overall, it reaffirmed my belief in the power of design to simplify complex experiences and build user trust.
